Jawetz, Melnick & Adelberg's Medical Microbiology, 25th Ed. 2010 - Microbiología Médica de Jawetz 25ª Ed. 2010 (Inglés) NUEVA EDICIÓN DEL JAWETZ
Linking fundamental principles with the diagnosis and treatment of microbial infections, this classic text delivers an essential overview of the roles microorganisms play in human health and illness. In addition to the brief descriptions of the organisms, you'll find vital perspectives on pathogenesis, diagnostic laboratory tests, clinical findings, treatment, and epidemiology. The book introduces you to basic clinical microbiology through the fields of bacteriology, virology, mycology, and parasitology, giving you a far-reaching yet student-friendly review of the discipline. All chapters have been extensively revised to reflect the tremendous expansion of medical knowledge afforded by molecular mechanisms, advances in our understanding of microbial pathogenesis, and the discovery of unusual pathogens.

Erythropoietins, Erythropoietic Factors, and Erythropoiesis: Molecular, Cellular, Preclinical, and Clinical Biology - EPOs, Factores Eritropoyéticos y Eritropoyesis: Biología Molecular, Celular, Preclínica y Clínica

Erythropoietins, Erythropoietic Factors, and Erythropoiesis: Molecular, Cellular, Preclinical, and Clinical Biology - EPOs, Factores Eritropoyéticos y Eritropoyesis: Biología Molecular, Celular, Preclínica y Clínica
Publisher: Birkhauser Verlag | ISBN: 3764386940 | edition 2009 | PDF | 326 pages | 8,4 mb
Research on, and interest in, red blood cell formation spans several centuries and was thought to have peaked in the 1980s with the cloning of the erythropoietin (EPO) gene. In the years subsequent to the cloning of EPO and its expression as a recombinant protein, much was written about EPO. Although much has been learned and published, new, exciting data are becoming available on almost a daily basis. Erythropoietins and Erythropoiesis: Molecular, Cellular, Preclinical, and Clinical Biology compiles both pertinent historical and very recent research on this molecule and its clinical utility. The book is divided into two sections: Background and Basic Science and Clinical Uses of Recombinant Erythropoietins. To begin, Israels and Israels describe the biology of red cells, the hierarchy of erythropoietic progenitor cells, their development to mature cells, and the effects of endogenous EPO on their development. Foote summarizes the historical interest in, and search for, an erythropoietic factor. Once EPO was identified, cloned, and expressed, the path was set for the study of other aspects of EPO biology both within erythropoiesis and other cellular systems.

Force Microscopy: Applications in Biology and Medicine - Microscopia de Fuerza: Aplicaciones en Biología y Medicina

Force Microscopy: Applications in Biology and Medicine - Microscopia de Fuerza: Aplicaciones en Biología y Medicina
Publisher: Wiley-Liss | ISBN: 0471396281 | edition 2006 | PDF | 300 pages | 5.5 mb
A complete examination of the uses of the atomic force microscope in biology and medicine. This cutting-edge text, written by a team of leading experts, is the first detailed examination of the latest, most powerful scanning probe microscope, the atomic force microscope (AFM). Using the AFM, in combination with conventional tools and techniques, readers gain a profound understanding of the cell, subcellular organelles, and biomolecular structure and function.
The text begins with three chapters describing the molecular machinery and mechanism of cell secretion and membrane fusion in cells, using approaches that combine AFM, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, photon correlation spectroscopy, molecular biology, biochemistry, and electrophysiology. The discovery of a new cellular structure the "porosome" or fusion pore--the cells secretory machinery, the molecular mechanism of membrane fusion in cells, and the expulsion of intravesicular contents during cell secretion are outlined in the first three chapters. The book also covers:
* Identification of the "porosome" in the growth hormone secreting cell of the pituitary gland
* Probing the structural and physical properties of microbial cell surfaces
* Scanning probe microscopic characterization of the higher plant cell wall and its components
* Case studies of nano drug delivery systems using engineered dendrimers
* AFM techniques for studying living cells
* Investigating the intermolecular forces of leukocyte adhesion molecules
* Protein-protein interactions
* Micromechanical properties of lipid bilayers and vesicles
The text concludes with four chapters that examine new and emerging approaches in the use of force microscopy in biology and medicine.
This text is ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate students and researchers in cell and molecular biology, genetics, genomics, physiology, neuroscience, biophysics, and biochemistry. Not only does it provide the theory, but also practical considerations such as the selection of the right tools and approach.

Karp continues to help biologists make important connections between key concepts and experimentation. The sixth edition explores core concepts in considerable depth and presents experimental detail when it helps to explain and reinforce the concepts. The majority of discussions have been modified to reflect the latest changes in the field. The book also builds on its strong illustration program by opening each chapter with 揤IP?art that serves as a visual summary for the chapter. Over 60 new micrographs and computer-derived images have been added to enhance the material. Biologists benefit from these changes as they build their skills in making the connection.

This how-to guide presents today's most complete coverage of performing, interpreting, and reporting post-mortem examinations. In addition to discussing the basics of the specialty, this lasting and useful reference features information on the performance of specialized autopsy procedures. The material is divided into two sections for ease of use: a manual covering specific autopsy procedures, biosafety, generation of autopsy reports, preparation of death certificates, and other essential subjects; and an atlas, organized by organ system, that captures the appearance of the complete spectrum of autopsy findings. The updated second edition features a new chapter on the popular topic of forensic pathology and the Expert Consult functionality allows you to access the entire contents of the book online.
* Focuses on hospital autopsy, while also providing a brief introduction to forensic autopsy.
* Examines autopsy photography and radiology, microscopic examination, supplemental laboratory studies, and other investigative approaches.
* Includes a chapter on performing special dissection procedures that are usually not covered during a typical residency.
* Presents over 590 full-color photographs depicting common gross and microscopic autopsy findings for every part of the body.
* Correlates pathologic findings with their clinical causes to enhance diagnostic accuracy.
* Covers the hot topic of forensic pathology in a new chapter introducing the subspecialty.
* Addresses the latest legal, social, and ethical issues as well as quality improvement and quality assurance.
* Features improved images in the Atlas section to give an even more useful visual reference.
